Zumba may seem more like girls' night than gym time—but it's still a killer workout: Doing Zumba just 2 to 3 times a week can help you blast fat, new research from Denmark reveals.

In the study, women were randomly assigned to play soccer, take a Zumba class, or stay sedentary. Both exercise groups attended 2 to 3 training sessions per week, each lasting an hour. After 12 weeks, the soccer players and the Zumba participants shed significant amounts of fat.

There was also a benefit the women couldn't see: They had increased levels of osteocalcin, a protein correlated with bone density. This suggests that Zumba workouts may be intense enough to improve bone mineral content, the scientists say.

Ready to bust a move—and tone up while doing it? Consider Zumba class one continuous dance party: The group in the study danced non-stop to Latin music, starting with 5 minutes of low-intensity moves, then a gradual increase in intensity until the last few minutes of class. Their average heart rate? 136 beats per minute—which comes out to 75 percent of their heart rate max.
