The Intermediate program is intended for those with little previous experience in the field of wine and spirits. Students will also be introduced to the main styles of wines produced by key grape varieties and a specific number of regions. By the end of the course a student will know, simply by reading a wine or spirit label what most wine and spirits taste like.

The course is very suitable for people who are not employed in the drinks industry but wish to learn more about the subject. However, it is important that potential students appreciate that this is primarily a professional development course for the drinks industry and is approached in that way by our tutors.

Curriculum

The following units are covered:

• Factors Influencing Wine Style: Environmental, Vine Growing, Winemaking, Maturation
• Grape Varieties: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon Syrah Shiraz , Grenache
• Key Wine Producing Regions: France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, USA, Argentina, Chile, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Sparkling Wines
• Sweet Wines and Frotified Wines
• Spirits and Liquors

To gain level 2 Qualification candidates will be required to successfully complete: Eight 2 hour sessions plus exam consisting of a multiple choice paper of fifty questions.

2010 Course consists of: Eight 2 hour sessions plus exam

Tutor: Alex Wilcox, Russell Gehling and Iain Cameron.
