The Genesis of Ryde Art Society was in 1959, when as part of the Granny Smith Festival, an exhibition of paintings was held at Tanner's Furniture Shop at Eastwood.

Because of the interest created, Mr G.R (Bunny) Cannon, with the support of local artists, became interested in forming an Art Society in the district. With the approval of Ryde Council,Ryde Municipal Art Society was founded and its first meeting was held at Tanner's Store in 1959.

The year 1980 was an eventful one for R.M.A.S when it, and the Ryde Historical Society were given joint occupancy of Historical Willandra House. This provides a Gallery for the showing of works by members and other artists and is open to the public from 9.30am to 3pm Monday to Thursday, 2pm to 4pm Saturday and Sunday, closed Friday.

Willandra also accomodates an art school, which conducts day and evening classes in various types of art. Workshops with local or visiting artists are held throughout the year, and cover all subjects and mediums.

As well as exhibitions and activities at Willandra, the Society provides demonstrations and criticism nights, outdoor paintings days and painting holidays. Its aims are not only to foster skills but, to encourage an appreciation of art in the community.

The City Of Ryde Art Society holds its annual Open Art Award, attracting prominent local and country artists, at the North Ryde Community Hall, Cox's Road, North Ryde.
