Digital photography has come a long way over the past few years and this course is designed to enable the participant to comprehend the intricacies of and get the best out of their DSLR investment. This course is supported by high quality course materials and requires the participant to complete weekly shooting assignments to reinforce the practical and theoretical skills acquired. This course is a hands on practical based study in how to operate the camera in manual mode, understand the camera menus and histograms, ISO, Aperture and Shutter Speed combinations, lens characteristics and metering techniques.
Course 1 provides the ideal introduction to photography and enables the participant to begin using their camera hardware to create sharp, well exposed and interesting images.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this course participants will be able to:
Understand their DSLR camera functions and menus
Understand exposure and metering techniques and options
Make educated choices on ISO, Aperture and Shutter Speed combinations
Understand lens focal length, speeds and optical capabilities
Understand deep of field and how to create images using aperture as a design tool
Use their camera in manual mode and create rather than record images
Timetable
Week 1 Introducing the camera, functions, menus and exposure
Week 2 ISO, Aperture, Shutter Speed, Depth of Field working in manual mode
Week 3 Lenses and lens characteristics
Week 4 Metering techniques
Week 5 Review of course material and fine tuning of techniques
Teaching Strategies
Course 1 is delivered via a series of 5 x 3hour classes. Each class is held on the same evening/day over 5 consecutive weeks and consists of practical hands on instruction, some theory and open critique and discussion of assignment work. The open critique is a valuable learning tool. The tutor has the opportunity to appraise your photography discuss the positives and negatives and provide the advice and tools to improve the image. The open critique enables students to view classmates work and gain ideas and inspiration. Collaboration on assignment work is highly encouraged.
Facilities and Equipment Requirements
This course is delivered from professional photography studios and training rooms. The tutor will present each class using visual aids and hands on demonstrations. Students are required to have a DSLR camera, lenses and their camera manual. A tripod and a lens hood are recommended but not compulsory for this course.
Each student has a login to our learning management site. The student utilises the site to download their course workbooks, upload their assignment submissions, enter the regular competitions, check site news and events and update their course calendar.
Assessment
Assessment is conducted through review of weekly assignments. On successful completion of course 1, students will be awarded a certificate of completion and invited to enrol for course 2.
