Implementing Diet and Exercise Together More Successful

Embarking on a combination of exercise regime and improved diet at the same time is more effective than starting one habit before the other, according to a recent study.

Researchers from the Stanford University School of Medicine divided 200 inactive people aged 45 years and older, who also had poor diets, into four groups: participants in the first group embarked on new exercise and diet regimes concurrently; those in the second group made diet improvements first, then started working out a few months later; the third group started with the exercise program and added the diet changes later. The fourth, control group, made no changes to diet or exercise. Each group was tracked and coached by telephone for a year.

The group that changed diet and exercise simultaneously was found to be most likely to meet the US government recommended 150 minutes of exercise per week and 5 to 9 daily serves of fruit and vegetables. Participants were also more likely to consume fewer calories in the form of saturated fat.

The second most effective lifestyle change pattern was found to be starting with exercise and then making dietary changes later. The least effective combination was making dietary changes first and then adding exercise. Explaining the possible reason for the outcomes, study author Abby King, a professor of health research and policy, and of medicine, said; ‘With dietary habits, you have no choice; you have to eat. You don't have to find extra time to eat because it's already in your schedule. So the focus is more on substituting the right kinds of food to eat.’
