Eating Brekkie May Help Guard Against Diabetes

The findings of a recent study suggest that overweight people who skip breakfast may be increasing their risk of developing diabetes.

In a small study led by Dr Elizabeth Thomas, an instructor of medicine at the University of Colorado.nine overweight or obese women experienced insulin resistance (a risk factor for diabetes) when they didn’t eat breakfast.

The study subjects, whose average age was 29 years, had their insulin and blood sugar levels measured on two different days after they had eaten lunch. On the first day, they had eaten breakfast; the second day, they hadn’t.

On the day they skipped breakfast the study participants experienced considerably higher insulin levels, meaning that they required higher levels of insulin to help their cellstake in the glucose from their lunch and convert it to energy.

Thomas reported; ‘There was a 28 per cent increase in the insulin response and a 12 per cent increase in the glucose response after skipping breakfast’, increases she described as moderate, and mild, respectively.

‘Eating a healthy breakfast is probably beneficial. It may not only help you control your weight but avoid diabetes’ Thomas said.

Although the finding was deemed interesting by other health professionals, it was noted that the link was not causal; ‘This is a small, but very interesting, study. The findings will have to be verified with larger studies’ said Dr Ping Wang, director of the University of California, Irvine, Health Diabetes Center.
