After Dinner Walks The Route To Better Health Outcomes

A series of shorter walks throughout the day – and preferably half an hour after meals – is more effective at lowering blood sugar levels than one longer walk, according to a recent US study.

Lead researcher Loretta DiPietro, chairwoman of the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services in Washington, DC, reported that a 15-minute walk three times a day after meals resulted in lower glucose levels than one 45-minute walk in either the morning or the evening; ‘The post-meal walking was significantly better than the other two exercise prescriptions at lowering the post-dinner glucose level.’

For the study 10 obese participants with an average age of 70 completed three different exercise routines. In three separate 48-hour periods, the study subjects blood sugar levels were monitored throughout while they remained sedentary for the first day, and then completed an exercise prescription the following day. In one study period they walked at 4.8kmph for 45 minutes in the morning; in another they walked at the same speed and duration in the evening; and in another they completed the same speed and duration, but divided into three 15-minute post-meal sessions.

The shorter post-meal instalments resulted in the greatest reduction in blood glucose levels. DiPietro noted that when you wait for half an hour after eating to go for a walk ‘the glucose starts flooding the blood. You are using the working muscles to help clear the glucose from the blood stream… (the exercise) is helping a sluggish pancreas do its job, to secrete insulin to clear the glucose.’

Lowering glucose levels is one way of reducing a risk factor that can lead to diabetes, and as the post-dinner period is a particularly sensitive time for older people at risk of diabetes, the benefits of a post dinner walk are considerable.
