One Key To Creating Unforgettable Songs
band writing session

Melodic Hooks.

There are 12 notes in music.  That doesn’t sound like a lot, however there are countless variations and combinations of those twelve notes. The possibilities truly are endless. Think about your PIN number for your Debit Card. That’s normally 4-6 digits right? Well that’s apparently enough to keep even the most earnest criminal guessing. Or how about digital data. We’re told it’s simply varied sequences of zeros and ones, something like this....0011110000111100000000011000010000000000111111 011 0110 01001111. Remember we’re dealing with twelve possible notes.

OK, let’s just look at one key. Using only scale tones we’re still left with 7 notes. ie. C D E F G A B

So what’s my point?  It's this. If you want to create a melodic hook for your song, first you have to create order from the limitless, unending choice of notes.

A simple and effective way to do this is by using repetition. Short repeated phrases. Sometimes your songs lyric will dictate the phrasing, sometimes the reverse is true. But once you’ve hit on a phrase you like, repeat it. To start, work in groups of two lines at first.

(Notice we haven’t even started to consider note choice or length yet!)

Ahh, the much maligned repetition. Treat every part of your song as the ‘hook’ and you’ll soon have many hooks to hang your musical hat on. (sorry about the pun)

Be a better writer today than you were yesterday and you're well on your way.
