Recognition of Prior Learning is an assessment process that assesses the individual’s formal and informal learning to determine the extent to which that individual has achieved the required learning outcomes of a Unit/s of Competency within a Qualification.

The process requires the individual to prepare a portfolio of evidence to prove that they have gathered through a range of experiences or learning the benchmarks outlined in the performance criteria of a particular unit of competency. This evidence will need to be complete, authentic and in many cases certified. All of the evidence will need to be organised against the specific performance criteria from the Unit of Competency that you wish to have recognised. All Units of Competency within a vocational qualification have a number of performance criteria that are very specific and must be clearly evidenced before an accredited outcome can be awarded.

The types of evidence you will need to gather, organise and certify for consideration may include:
- Preparation of a current curriculum vitae
- Copies of Position Descriptions for recent or relevant roles
- Examples of past work
- Declarations from employers
- Referee reports
- Certified copies of awards, certificates and/or qualifications
- Workshop attendance evidence and workshop outlines
- Evidence of professional development
- Other items, such as, summary of volunteer work, minutes of meetings where you had a relevant role, documentation of community based activities and references
