Sakura Gakuen
Term 4 Week 7

Fuji class at Sakura Gakuen
by Chiaki sensei
In the Fuji class this term we are working hard on the basics, hiragana and more. We have been practicing the hiragana song which helps the students remember the hiragana alphabet using a rhythm. This is a proven research based method to remember sounds and words. Please practice the song at home with your child. You can find it on youtube Students also enjoy using the mini-whiteboards provided by Sakura Gakuen every lesson to practice their writing as much as they like. The children are young and active and sometimes struggle to focus but through active and play based learning they are improving their Japanese skills each week. I am very proud of them. Last week children practicing saying the names of items around them in the room. They enjoyed this concrete learning very much. This week we will be learning the names of musical instruments and much more. Please feel free to come along and watch a class anytime.

Culture class 15th November – Inarizushi – rice pockets in tofu
Last Saturday with the help of Ayana Sensei students made the traditional Inarizushi. This is a small amount of sushi rice placed inside a sweetened pocket of cooked tofu. Students took some rice from the rice cooker pre-prepared by Ayana sensei and shaped it into small balls using gladwrap and their hands. After that they put the rice inside one of the prepared sweet tofu pockets. Support teachers and parents and staff were on hand to help and even playgroup families joined in the messy fun. Ayana sensei kindly had prepared several cute add on shapes of nori – seaweed to make faces and the like on the tofu pockets. You can see them in the photo above. Children were very pleased with their efforts. Not everyone liked the taste but they had fun making them.

This week culture class is in the science centre and so unfortunately we cannot have any playgroup children attend. Please join playgroup in the usual room from 9.30.
