Thank you from doMore

I'd like to thank you for being involved in the doMore.com.au community and the team and I hope that you've received value from being a part of it.

doMore was our original passion project born out of the desire to help connect people wanting to learn something new with experts that could teach them over 10 years ago.

Over the years we have helped almost 70,000 learners connect with one of over 1,500 courses and providers, across the country. For that, we're very proud and grateful for your contribution.

doMore.com.au also served to teach us about how to help measure and improve business performance and inspired the launch and growth of two other companies as a result, one of which we've decided to dedicate our resources and energy to making great.

We'll be switching the site off on Tuesday 31st of July. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us directly on [email protected].

Thanks again and good luck with your teaching endeavours in the future.

Warm regards,

The doMore team.

Teaching Fragments

It is a good idea (not just with children?) to teach fragments of songs rather than whole complete pieces of music. This way you are learning more and are less likely to get bored and frustrated by being forced to bang away at the same thing for hours on end?

Here are a few ideas that I have found effective to mix and match during recent guitar lessons aimed at children who are complete beginners.

Its nice to have a few sheets with versions of simple tunes and figures which use only a single string for absolute novices (this also has the advantage of allowing students to get a pleasing result from a guitar that may not be properly in tune)

The theme from Shrek
Happy Birthday
Police Siren (E string 3rd fret to the E string open and repeated as required)
Smoke On The Water (single note version starting from an open A string)

I use a range of sheets with JUMBO sized Tab and notation so that you can easily learn your new chords. These sheets have large graphics designed to be studied from a distance and are ideal for shorter segments of music.

First Guitar Lesson: Teaching Absolute Beginners
My students vary quite considerably in terms of how quickly (or slowly) they are able to develop skills or take on board information.

It is quite possible (even desirable!) that sometimes a particular student might benefit from being introduced to some of the material from the next session. It is equally likely (and indeed desirable) that I might spend more than one lesson dealing with a particular chord sequence or fingering exercise.

The following information is given to both students and parents as a way of seeing how I approach teaching the guitar and the type of things actually covered.

Lesson # 1: The First Four Chords

Learning correct posture and parts of guitar is introduced and revisited over time.

Aims and Objectives: By the end of the lesson the student will be able to:

Learn the shapes of two of the chords (E, Eminor, )
Play those chords in time and start to change from one chord to the next.
Get the guitar in tune. This used to be a real problem but the novices of today have it easy. Electronic guitar tuners are a must and will ensure that the student is able to play along effectively with any backing tracks.
Music Theory (and why we won't worry about it during early sessions)

The first of those elements mentioned above (Music Theory) covers some of the following questions

Which notes do I play?
Which scale will fit over a particular chord sequence?
Which chords sound good together and why?
