The Diploma of Counselling at Ikon Institute of SA is designed to provide graduates with an applied knowledge and skill set for working in the counselling and helping professions. Counselling skills are readily transferable to a broad range on job roles. Diploma graduates emerge equipped with a strong foundation in counselling theory and practice. Typically participants may include professions such as community service workers, teachers, human resource personnel, lay counsellors and religious leaders. Any person with a passion for supporting and empowering others as well as a commitment to their own growth may enter this course.

Graduates are able to practise as counsellors in Australia and be eligible to apply for membership with the Australian Counselling Association (ACA).

Delivery methods integrate both trainer and trainees’ input through classroom training, group activities, simulated counseling sessions and reflection. All underpinning knowledge and skills development will be covered via this holistic approach which will excel in meeting competency and industry standards.

Ikon Institute SA’s teaching staff come from diverse backgrounds and have years of professional experience in the field. The Diploma’s have a humanistic orientation and a strong focus on experiential learning and skill practice.

Course outline and logistics

Course delivery is through a combination of off-the-job facilitated classroom training and on-the-job placement. This will be achieved through direct classroom instruction, a series of workplace scenario based projects, informal group discussion, in-class and placement activities and assessments (to be undertaken between training sessions).

The Diploma runs intensively over 13 x 3-day modules with 28 tutorials between modules. The course also includes up to 8 hours of Self Directed Study each week where students will practise skills and complete assignments. There is a strong focus on skill development and learning in the course with approximately 80-100 hours of supervised triad work and a 100 hour job placement.
