CAN I SOCIALISE MY PUPPY BEFORE THEY'VE HAD ALL THEIR VACCINATIONS?

This is a personal choice you have to make but do as much research as you can, speak to a few vets in your area to see how prevalent dangerous diseases are.  Some vets opt to err on the side of caution and say to keep puppy in till their last vaccination while others understand the importance of early socialisation and recommend taking the chance, but they will tell you how to do it carefully.  Melbourne has one of the highest vaccinations rates in the world, particularly in the inner suburbs.

If you decide to take your puppy outdoors before their last vaccination it's recommended they stay off the grass, don't drink out of public dog bowls, avoid going near or sniffing dog feces, don't meet dogs who aren't up-to-date with their vaccinations and when you go to the vet, unless you know the floor has been cleaned, carry your puppy in.  In and around vet clinics can be dangerous.  If you are doing puppy classes in a vet clinic the trainer should have cleaned the floor with recommended cleaning solutions before you arrive.

If you decide to keep puppy indoors until after their final vaccination you'll need to bring as much into their inside world as possible i.e. many, many people including children and men (Dr Ian Dunbar recommends no less than 100 different people by the age of 12 weeks), other vaccinated dogs, sounds, textures etc...

Pros of socialising before puppy has had last vaccination -

  • There are studies that show more dogs die from being under-socialised than under-vaccinated due to behaviour problems.
  • A dog who isn't socialised properly as puppies often end up being surrendered to shelters.
  • We have such a short amount of time left within the critical learning period to socialise our puppies
  • Avoid behaviour problems like aggression and fearfulness
  • Create a bombproof dog who can cope well in our world

Cons of socialising before puppy has had last vaccination -

  • If your puppy gets parvo or some other disease it may cause death
  • Treatment for these diseases cost a lot of money
