ORIGINS OF ARTHRITIS VICTORIA
In the 1960s when rheumatologist Dr Leslie Koadlow reflected on what support people with arthritis needed to manage their condition, he acknowledged that people other than doctors had an important contribution to make in this process. He saw the need for an organisation to support people with arthritis to live better with their condition between appointments with their medical practitioners. At the heart of this was the idea that people with arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions could help each other. Self help groups were therefore crucial to the development of Arthritis Victoria, and the first service the organisation provided. Self help remains at the heart of the way in which Arthritis Victoria provides services.
