About us

Carlton Neighbourhood Learning Centre (CNLC) began in 1974 as a drop in centre operating for a few hours a week and run by volunteers. CNLC is now run by a community-based committee of management, operating every weekday, some nights of the week and some weekends. The main activities of the Centre are Further Education and Community Development classes and programs, and the provision of community information.

CNLC is located at 20 Princes Street, Carlton North. The Centre is open to the general community. with focus on local people who are experiencing disadvantage. Centre participants come from a diverse range of ethnic and cultural backgrounds and age groups.

The committee currently employs two coordinators - the Centre Manager and a Further Education Co-ordinator, who work together as a team. It also employs over 20 tutors, volunteers and program staff. The funding for the position is derived from the Department of Victorian Communities ‘Neighbourhood House Coordination Program’ (NHCP) as well as Adult Community and Further Education funding.

• Provide access, support, and pathways for adult education, training and employment and community participation.
• Provide a broad range of community based basic adult education programs:
• Accredited and non accredited courses in language and literacy
• Basic information technology programs, including specialist and user pays courses
• General preparatory and vocational programs
• Provide a broad range of personal and social support programs and services for community development including
• Information and referral
• Drop-in program
• Social and recreational programs
• Outreach programs
• Space for support groups and individuals to operate activities.
• Participate in education and community networks and work closely with communities of interest to best serve community needs.
• Develop partnerships with local and wider interest based agencies to undertake joint projects.
• Ensure responsible financial management and secure funds for organisational advancement and improvement.
