Although there are no artefacts or records dating back to the Stone Age, it is believed that the first settlers on Bali migrated from China around 2500 B.C. Around 300BC Balinese culture had evolved quite considerably, with complex systems of rice production and irrigation.

The Balinese are one of Indonesia's 250 ethnic groups. Like most Indonesians they are a blend of races, with the accent on the Malayan race of Central and East Java, with traces of Polynesian and Melanesian blood, as well as Indian and Chinese

The Balinese are a very earthy people and strongly believe in the power of spirits and magic; they believe that the good spirits live in the mountains and fields with the demons dwelling within the seas. Because of this offerings play a significant role their day to day lives. Every day small offering trays (canang sari) which hold flowers, money and symbolic foods are placed outside temples, houses and shops. These offerings are said to appease the spirits and thereby bring good health and prosperity to the families and the community.

The idea that everything is connected permeates and underlies Balinese people’s perceptions of life. Life, death, gods, demons, man, woman, nature, art, love, music, dance, work and play, everything is inter-linked and interrelated and what you do in one area of life will ultimately affect the whole. Therefore everything is then considered sacred and is done with a sense of reverence and joy and always celebrating the spirit of life.

These philosophies are also deeply entwined within the Bali massage, with its origins also based in Tibetan, Chinese and Indian Ayurvedic therapies. In Bali, many factors are thought to contribute to disease. In addition to emotional and physical disorders, Balinese therapies involve becoming more aware of the invisible realms around us to deal with many health issues.

The Bali massage course is run over 3 days 9am to 5pm, usually on a Saturday, Sunday and Monday. The Academy of Therapeutic Arts was the first Nationally Accredited training school to receive national recognition for the Balinese (Bali) massage course. This means that once you have completed the subject you will receive a nationally recognised statement of attainment that can also be used within a Certificate IV or Diploma of Massage.

In the past 20 years, the massage therapy industry has grown from an "alternative' therapy enjoyed by a few to a worldwide, billion dollar industry accepted by mainstream healthfunds.

This incredible growth has seen professionlisation of the industry and as a result, massage therapy training has become increasingly scrutinised and massage therapy training schools subject to quality measures.

Our practically based massage training courses teach many dynamic styles of ancient bodywork that focus on the 'whole' person by taking a holistic approach that incorporates business principles and medical science while emphasising the emotional, spiritual and intuitive aspects of life. We also teach remedial massage, deep tissue massage, relaxation massage and Swedish massage techniques so that our massage therapists are multi-skilled and ready for any clinic enviroment before they graduate.

This ensures graduates will 'stand out in the crowd' as they are not just on par with the average massage therapist, but that they are the very best massage therapist they can be.

Our massage therapy training therefore finds the balance through combining the very best of "modern knowledge and ancient wisdom".

Our massage therapy training encourages students to reflect on their own experiences and health to understand the impact touch can have on client's physically, emotionally and energetically. As i have learnt from the many years of teachingmassage during the past decade, this is a crucial step in making the leap from ordinary to extraordinary in offering clients the very best treatment and opportunites for growth.

My life's teachers who have shared their wisdom, knowledge and gifts form the heart have been the inspiration for founding the Academy of Therapeutic Arts so that such heartfelt knowledge can be passed on to the next generation of massage therapists.
