If guiding financial activities in the world of business sounds like an interesting challenge, then accountancy is the right career for you.

Professional accountants are in increasing demand nationally and internationally by organizations throughout commercial, public and not-for-profit sectors. Accountants can work in commerce and industry, in public or chartered accounting firms, in government organizations or as individual practitioners.

In fact, an accounting qualification is ideal for success in any business career.

The Accountancy major prepares students for professional accreditation in one of the most respected business professions.

You will graduate equipped to understand financial and management accounting requirements, specialized applications in company accounting, audit and assurance, and tax and company regulation.

You develop key accounting concepts, problem-solving skills, and critical and analytical thinking, and learn about contemporary issues facing modern businesses such as superannuation and wealth management and forensics through further studies within the school.

The Capstone Accountancy unit simulates real-world situations faced by professional accountants, and you gain hands-on experience working in teams to research issues and develop practical solutions.
Course combinations and career outcomes
Extend your Accountancy major with additional accounting units, or combine it with studies in professional accounting, regulation and tax, forensics, superannuation and wealth management, quantitative economics or finance.

Knowledge in professional accounting will set you up for a career in any accounting firm, large or small. Explore financial accounting options in a range of industries, work for national or international organizations, or launch your career in the growth area of superannuation.

Your other accounting option is to gain specialist knowledge in the areas of regulation and tax, or superannuation and wealth management, preparing you for a career in tax and financial planning for individuals.

Combining your accountancy studies with finance widens your career opportunities to encompass corporate advisory services including takeovers, mergers and acquisitions, new company floats, the funding of operations, investment of funds and Treasury management within the government sector.

Through our four discipline-focused schools, our graduate school and corporate education unit the Faculty of Business offers a range of first-class undergraduate, postgraduate and corporate education programs which are underpinned by a real-world focus and a global perspective.

We have strong industry and community links which ensure that we are meeting the needs and expectations of employers and providing a strong practical component throughout our courses.
Our students are encouraged to undertake real-world projects to develop their own strong industry and community links, and also to participate in our extensive international exchange programs and study tour options. Students have access to strong support mechanisms and extra-curricular programs to enable them to make the very best of their studies.

This strong practical component of our courses is complemented by our academic excellence. The diversity of interests, experiences, and expertise of our locally and internationally drawn academic staff creates a rich learning and research environment.

We undertake high-level research in a range of areas. Our three research centers, the Australian Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies, National Center for Econometric Research and the Australian Center for Entrepreneurship Research plus two research clusters, Infrastructure Management and Services Innovation, provide opportunities for higher degree research study in areas of international renown.

First-class courses, a global community and industry links deliver a learning experience that develops our students’ careers and transforms their future. There are many reasons why we are the first Australian business school with triple international accreditation.
