BEGINNERS

Beginners are welcome to all our training sessions!
(Occasionally we run Introductory courses - check at your local dojo to see when the next one is coming up.)

In The Beginning….
Firstly, we need you to observe a class at the dojo you will be attending, this is so that you can see how we train and know what to expect. At this time you can ask any questions you may have before or after the class and pick up application forms, etc.

Which classes can I attend?
Beginners are more than welcome to train in any regular class in Tasmania at any time. You are encouraged to train at your own pace and level and will be given the opportunity to practice basic movements and learn to roll during regular classes - don’t worry, we won’t throw you in the deep end!

We do also offer beginners courses in each dojo at various times throughout the year. Please speak to your local dojo contact to see when the next course is running.

What do I wear?
It is not necessary to purchase a uniform (gi) when you first start training; it is quite alright to wear track suit pants and a tee shirt (as long as you don't mind rolling in them!) You will also need a pair of thongs or sandals for wearing to and from the mat.
Eventually you will want to purchase a gi, these cost around $60 - $80.
For safety please make sure you remove all jewellery before training. If an item of jewellery cannot be removed it must be taped over. Also please remember to keep your toenails and fingernails short and clean.

What equipment do I need?
Initially none, though you may want to bring a hand towel and water bottle.
Although each dojo should have a first aid kit it is recommended each student have some basic first aid items such as band aids, compression bandage, adhesive tape, etc.
Students should in time buy their own Jo (wooden fighting stick), bokken (wooden sword) and tanto (wooden knife).

Dojo etiquette
Dojo etiquette is a reminder to the student to remain aware and sensitive to their surroundings and others who are training and is an essential part of Aikido.
The big tip is to watch more experienced students and follow their lead!
